Conscientious Objector of Fortune: Profile
I ascribe to the maxim that "If you don't have anything important to say, don't say anything." Therefore, I don't know how active I'll be on this account, but I can at least post a personal profile (and set a few things straight.)
So first of all, I have no idea what's with the "My account" section, and I don't know how to fix it. I'm class of '11, not '07. October 20th is the day I created this account, not my graduation year.
Also, "lit" is probably highly inaccurate undergraduate focus information.
I'm very interested in creative writing (not poetry, and not studying classical literature). I intend to get published someday, perhaps in the near future. That's why I put down "lit."
However, there's a good chance that I won't get my degree in creative writing. I'm very interested in Peace Studies, and currently taking the Gaia: Ecology and Peace course. Like creative writing, I intend to pursue peace studies long after graduation, and I may very well make it my major.
But at this point, who really knows?
Now that that's cleared up, let me back up and give a proper introduction.
As I indicated earlier, I'm a first year, and before attending Antioch, I was a homeschooler. College is a very new experience for me, but so far, I'm doing pretty well.
I come from Peekskill, in New York. My parents and my three younger sisters live in our house out there.
I'm a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy. My favorite series are Star Wars (the movies and the Expanded Universe, minus the New Jedi Order and Legacy eras, which should be purged from canon forthwith) and Discworld. Plus a great deal more.
And I'm an atheist. A religious atheist, I kid you not. I haven't actually gotten around to applying for membership with the Religious Society of Friends (or Quakers) but I consider myself a Quaker.
As if that weren't bad enough, I'm an insufferable moralist, to boot. I believe in the sanctity of all human life ("human" here defined as anything older than a fetus say, somewhere between 4-6 months old), and I believe in the equality of all people, regardless of class, religion, nationality, race, gender, disability status, sexual orientation, or any other social category used by one group to oppress another.
I am very strongly against capitalism, and the current American government.
I'm also an optimist, and a cynic, which makes for a simply de-lightful combination.
What else?
I spent the summer working part-time at the Field Library in Peekskill, where I've volunteered for a couple years. I now have a work study job at the Antioch Library.
Let's see ... apart from Gaia, I'm taking General Psychology, and Introduction to French, to very interesting courses. I'm also taking soccer for my Physical Education credit. I chipped a bone in my ankle out on the soccer field last month, but it's recovered pretty well since then.
I first learned of the Board's decision to close the college a few days after the initial announcement (and I must confess at the time, I was much more preoccupied with Star Wars: Sacrifice, that book is evil.)
I came to Antioch anyway, partially out of momentum, and partially because I didn't have much chance of getting into my second choice colleges but also because I knew that Antioch is a unique college, and even just one year here is an opportunity well worth taking.
I've been very touched and impressed by the work done to save Antioch. I don't know that it will succeed, but I think the just the fact that we tried so hard and accomplished so much is a victory in and of itself.
And on that deep philosophical note, I take my leave ... for now.
Peace, everybody.
