Statement from YS for Keep Antioch College Open
Dear Antioch University Board of Trustees,
September 13, 2007
As villagers and recognized stakeholders with an interest in the future of Antioch College, we are both hopeful and concerned regarding the fast moving events of recent days. We have been impressed by the hard work of the Alumni Board, the College faculty, staff, students, and the many in the Yellow Springs Community who have worked so hard to keep our beloved Antioch College open. Out of this crisis, together we are creating a great opportunity.
We are hopeful because Antioch’s Development and Alumni Relations (per agreement with the Alumni Board and the Antioch University Board of Trustees) is now under the control of the Alumni Board. Important steps towards the establishing an independent governance structure for the College are being negotiated as the necessary foundation to make significant fundraising possible. The task before us is considerable.
Teach-In in YS: an alum's notes from the trenches
Dear Friends,
The following is my own attempt to relate the events of the past few days. I hope the other alums who attended can add their own perspectives to the mix. Everything I'm about to relate is either my own subjective experience or based on multiple sources, so be good Antiochians and take it with a grain of salt, ok? If I get something wrong, it's my own damn fault, though I would welcome correction. End disclaimer.
The college continues to be dismantled while classes are in session and students are paying tuition. Though it may appear from the outside as if alums have been granted a chance to make their best case to keep it open, our fellow Antiochians (students, staff and faculty) face daily challenges to their ability to do their work.
Antioch Blame Wrongly Placed – letter to the Berkshire Eagle
Saturday, July 14
To the Editor of THE EAGLE:
As an Antioch College alumni (1968), an Antioch University Trustee
(1995-2007), and now a member of the Antioch College Alumni Board, I would
like to make a few comments about Meghan Daum's op-ed essay of July 8.
There is plenty of blame to go around for the decline of Antioch College,
but don't point the finger at "insufficient alumni support," and the "Womyn
of Antioch." Since the board announced the 2008 closure, thousands of alumni
have come forward to organize chapters, raise money (more than half a
million was raised in two weeks) in the hopes of convincing the University
Board that it made the wrong decision, with wrong and incomplete information
and through a process that was (as we would call it) un-Antiochian.
Esteemed epidemiologist and proud Antiochian passes on
From today's LA Times
Dr. George W. Comstock, a pioneering epidemiologist who almost single-handedly blocked the use of the flawed BCG tuberculosis vaccine in the United States and who played a key role in the development of other prevention strategies against the disease, died Sunday at his home in Smithsburg, Md. He was 92 and had battled prostate cancer for several years.
...George Wills Comstock was born Jan. 7, 1915, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. While pursuing his undergraduate studies at Antioch College in Ohio, he obtained a part-time job at Eli Lilly's pharmaceutical laboratory.
He worked in a lab that studied pellagra.
Although his job "mostly involved washing glassware and cleaning dog cages," he later said, his boss persuaded him to switch from biochemistry to medicine and to attend Harvard Medical School...
